About Me

Hello and welcome! I'm Alex Carey. I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and psychotherapist and the founder and sole proprietor of Ascend Therapy Nashville.

This is what I believe about my chosen field:

• Therapy is as much art as science.

• It's the therapist's role to create a warm, welcoming, fruitful environment in which effective psychotherapy can take place.

• While not an exact science, therapy usually works only when backed up by solid evidence.

Prior to entering private practice, I spent many years working with veterans and members of the military. Most recently I spent nearly a decade as a therapist at Nashville's Tennessee Valley Healthcare System, part of the federal Veterans Health Administration.

Before becoming a therapist, I was a sportswriter and wrote fiction. I have two children with special needs. I grew up in Nashville but have deep Boston roots. I love the Red Sox and Celtics. Reading, movies, and the outdoors are important to me.
